Heart of Midlothian were eliminated from the Women’s Europa Cup after suffering a comprehensive 4-0 defeat to Real Sociedad in the second leg of their second-round qualifying tie.
Following a goalless first leg in Edinburgh, the Scottish champions struggled to create scoring opportunities in San Sebastian.
The home side dominated from the outset and made the breakthrough in the 18th minute, when winger Laura Camino met Ainhoa Marin’s delivery with an excellent 12-yard header into the far corner.
Hearts’ chances of remaining level at half-time faded with five minutes left in the opening period. Erin Rennie brought down midfielder Intza Egiguren, allowing Paula Fernandez to convert the resulting penalty.
Four minutes later, Cecilia Marcos sent a low ball into the area and fellow midfielder Ainoa Campo turned it in from close range to extend the advantage.
Heavy rain briefly disrupted the hosts’ momentum, while Lauren Wade registered Hearts’ first attempt on target with a 55th-minute free-kick that went directly to the goalkeeper.
Marin completed the scoring in the 76th minute by poking home the hosts’ fourth goal.
