There is no reason for Bournemouth to sound the alarm just yet. However, with European competition approaching and 2,000 supporters preparing to travel to San Sebastián next week, their domestic form is becoming a concern. Marco Rose’s side have surrendered leads in all four of his Premier League matches, continuing a damaging trend from Andoni Iraola’s time in charge.
“They scored twice from two shots on target, while we scored twice from 10,” Rose said as he reflected on the statistics. Keith Andrews offered a more positive assessment, describing the contest as a meeting between “two very honest teams” capable of causing each other problems.
Panic would serve little purpose. Unbeaten Brentford continue to demonstrate the value of continuity, measured choices and a settled system. Even so, Andrews had to replace the unavailable Nathan Collins in central defence with Jannik Schuster, a 20-year-old developed within the same Red Bull network as Rose.
The presence of a Brazil World Cup squad member at both Bournemouth and Brentford reflects the changing landscape of football in 2026. Rayan played 289 minutes in North America and made a stronger impression than Igor Thiago, who featured for only 63 minutes, although both are still searching for their best form. Evanilson, another Brazilian, delivered a much more convincing performance.
Andrews called Evanilson “a difficult opponent”, and the forward gave Schuster a demanding examination on his first league start. His manager admitted that the young defender did not get everything right but insisted that his courage and commitment could never be doubted.
Bournemouth wasted the first of several major opportunities when Antonio Silva headed Marcus Tavernier’s free-kick wide despite having an open goal in front of him.
Andrews maintained a steady stream of brief instructions to his assistants from the touchline. He later joked that this was about as calm as he ever becomes. Bournemouth’s aggressive pressing created difficulties, but Brentford’s physical strength was equally challenging. The opening half was intense without producing much quality, and both goals were untidy. Yehor Yarmoliuk first delivered a cross for Kevin Schade to head towards goal, with Djordje Petrovic only able to push the ball against the post before it went in.
Bournemouth’s poor record against Brentford continued, with their only victory in 12 years coming in the first leg of a Championship playoff semi-final they ultimately lost. They lacked both fortune and accuracy, most notably when Rayan missed a simple opportunity after Caoimhín Kelleher pushed the ball into his path. Justin Kluivert eventually equalised by taking advantage of disorganised defending and Kelleher’s slow reaction.
Alex Scott’s wild effort into the car park appeared to signal another half dominated by mistakes and heavy touches, but Bournemouth soon produced a moment of real quality. Evanilson controlled the ball superbly and provided the pass for Tavernier to score with a powerful low finish. Rose praised his striker’s tireless work and the many different qualities he contributes to the team.
Disaster followed as Bournemouth allowed another advantage to disappear. James Hill underhit a back-pass towards Petrovic, enabling Schade to collect the ball and calmly lift it over the goalkeeper. Andrews said the two-goal forward was reaching a higher level, particularly through his finishing and growing influence in attacking areas.
Ryan Christie was brought on to compete with Mamadou Sangaré in midfield as Bournemouth increased the pressure, while Brentford became less willing to take risks in pursuit of a winner. Kelleher made an excellent save from Tyler Adams before the American went down in pain. Moments later, following Scott’s flick, Rayan found space but somehow bent his attempt wide.
Rayan was substituted soon afterwards and, like Thiago, remains without a Premier League goal this season. Rose’s demanding style, much like Iraola’s, requires sustained energy from his players, which could prove difficult for a relatively small squad. Rose nevertheless stressed that Bournemouth must maintain the same performance level and commitment.
Ben Gannon-Doak arrived as part of a triple substitution and injected fresh energy, but Bournemouth were denied by fine margins during a frantic finish. Fellow substitute David Brooks stumbled over the ball when well placed to shoot, while Gannon-Doak’s deflected attempt struck the post in the closing moments, adding another missed chance to an increasingly long list this season.
