Shea Charles: Fulham midfielder unfazed by record-breaking transfer fee

News

Shea Charles may carry the expectations that come with being Northern Ireland’s record transfer, but his calm manner shows no sign of pressure.

Ahead of four upcoming Nations League fixtures, the Fulham midfielder appears relaxed yet focused as he prepares to help a youthful Northern Ireland squad maintain its recent development.

Charles completed a record £30m summer transfer from Championship club Southampton to Fulham, giving him the chance to step up a division and compete in the Premier League.

The midfielder says becoming Northern Ireland’s most expensive player feels “quite surreal”.

“I believe I was second or third on the list previously, so reaching the top is a great feeling. Playing in the Premier League and having the opportunity to enjoy my football is fantastic,” he said.

“I do not spend much time thinking about the transfer fee. When you look at the amounts being paid for players now, the figures are remarkable.

“I am fortunate to have supportive people around me. I live with my younger and older brothers, while my parents and close friends help me remain grounded.”

The 22-year-old will now turn his attention from club football to international duty, with Michael O’Neill’s team scheduled to meet Georgia twice as well as Hungary and Ukraine in the coming weeks.

Since making his senior debut in June 2022, Charles has earned 35 caps and believes international competition has played an important role in his career progression and development as a player.

“International football has been extremely important to me from the beginning. It gives you the chance to face players and teams that you would rarely encounter while competing in the Championship.

“Demonstrating what you can do against opponents of that standard was always likely to benefit my career.

“O’Neill has shown confidence in me since I joined the squad, selecting me whenever possible, and I am very grateful for the opportunities he has provided.

“He has also handed me greater responsibility, including the captain’s armband on a few occasions. I aim to lead through my actions both on and off the field and to be a positive example for the younger players.”
