In a landmark move for the women’s game, London City Lionesses have secured the signing of two-time Ballon d’Or recipient Alexia Putellas on a three-year contract, pulling off one of the most stunning captures in the sport’s history.
The Spanish midfielder, considered among the sport’s all-time greats, departed Barcelona in May following a 14-year spell, drawing attention from nearly every elite team in the world.
During her time at Barcelona, the 32-year-old claimed 38 trophies, including 10 domestic league championships.
Her introduction took place in New York City, appearing alongside Michele Kang, the American billionaire owner of London City.
“I am delighted to begin this new journey with London City Lionesses,” said Putellas.
“The team’s ambition and its unwavering dedication to developing as an independent, women-only organization truly resonate with me.
“I am eager to make an impact on the pitch as we pursue silverware.
“Off the field, building on my passion for youth development, I am equally excited to collaborate with Michele in elevating women’s football in England and across the global stage.”
Putellas led Barcelona as captain to a fourth UEFA Women’s Champions League title in her final season, while London City concluded their maiden campaign in the Women’s Super League in sixth position.
Convincing Putellas to join represents an extraordinary feat for London City, underlining their lofty ambitions.
It was reported last month that Putellas selected London City ahead of Boston Legacy, the final two clubs vying for her commitment.
“Alexia Putellas represents the highest level of talent, dedication and vision in women’s football,” said Kang.
“Her choosing to join our independent, women-first club is a powerful endorsement of what we are building.
“This is far more than a signing. It is a bold statement about the future of the sport.”
Putellas holds Barcelona’s club record with 232 goals in 507 matches, and she sits second on their all-time appearance list.
She lifted the World Cup with Spain in 2023 and was part of the side beaten by England in the Euro 2025 final.
Putellas was ruled out of Euro 2022 on the eve of the tournament due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and made her return at the end of the following season.
After regaining full fitness, she delivered the kind of performances that earned her consecutive Ballon d’Or awards in 2021 and 2022.
She arrives on a free transfer after allowing her Barcelona contract to expire, and is believed to be London City’s highest earner.
