The prime minister has strongly suggested that an additional public holiday will be granted should England secure victory in the World Cup.
England, managed by Thomas Tuchel, are set to face Norway in the quarter‑final clash on Saturday evening.
The championship match is scheduled for Sunday, 19 July, a week later.
There is broad anticipation that Sir Keir Starmer will resign as prime minister the following day, with Andy Burnham taking over the role.
If England reaches the final, the prime minister is expected to attend the match, potentially causing a short postponement in the transfer of power.
Regarding the prospect of an additional day off for the English public if the team triumphs in the World Cup, Sir Keir remarked: “Concerning the idea of a bank holiday, I don’t wish to tempt fate, but do revisit the question should we reach the final.”
Sources indicate that the extra bank holiday would fall on Friday, 24 July, the day after a potential England victory.
However, there remains the considerable challenge of England first needing to win a quarter‑final, semi‑final and the final itself.
