Most of those who shared their views were encouraged by Scotland’s performance at Stadion Stozice in Ljubljana, particularly by the improvement after the interval…
Craig: This was the first Scotland match in years that did not leave me feeling anxious. The energy after half-time was terrific. Although we failed to score, the new shape and greater attacking intent were impressive. Hopefully, this is something the team can build on.
George: The opening half was somewhat concerning, but the second was on another level. There was quality, confidence and defensive stability, with the goalkeeper barely tested. The finishing still needs improvement, though there were plenty of encouraging signs in the new manager’s first game.
Rosh: It felt like watching two completely different displays. Scotland were poor before the break and could hardly put two passes together. After half-time, however, they looked transformed and kept Slovenia pinned inside their own territory. The second-half showing was pleasing, but failing to convert chances remains the team’s biggest weakness.
Derek: Without wishing to criticise Steve Clarke too harshly, I would prefer to see Scotland play this way and lose rather than approach matches with excessive caution. Supporters do not enjoy football dominated by a fear of defeat. That said, reaching the World Cup was still a tremendous achievement.
Stuart: Scotland should shape this side around [Billy] Gilmour and [Lewis] Ferguson. [Robbie] Ure showed promise and should be given several games to demonstrate his ability. The back three looked uncertain at times, but adapting to a more adventurous system will require patience. On the whole, it was an encouraging performance.
Archie: It was frustrating not to begin with a victory, but there was enough encouragement considering this was the first match under the new manager after only five days of preparation.
Lindsey: I feel optimistic and believe the team is heading in the right direction. Gilmour was excellent and appeared to lift the players around him. Following another nervous start, Scotland gradually grew in confidence. Hopefully, they can carry that momentum into Tuesday night’s game at Hampden.
Shuggie: The contrast between the two halves was enormous. Scotland looked sluggish and hesitant before the break, then completely dominated after it. The display offered plenty of promise, although not securing the win was very disappointing. Gilmour was outstanding.
Mark: The first half was poor, but this is a squad learning to work with a new coach and tactical setup. The performance improved considerably after the interval, which gives me confidence about the future. With enough time, I believe the manager can make the system work.
Simon: There was much to admire in the second half. Scotland created opportunities, but converting them remains a familiar concern. The midfield moved the ball effectively in possession and competed strongly whenever they needed to regain it.
Colin: It was refreshing to see the new manager make changes because the squad needed renewed energy. The defence has been short of speed and has depended on too many players struggling for form. Selecting those who play regularly should make a difference. Additional attacking choices were also necessary, so hopefully the newcomers can make an impact. Both they and the manager deserve time.
Mark: The early indications are encouraging, but Scotland still do not have a clinical forward capable of finishing chances immediately. I am not convinced that any of the newcomers will resolve the team’s shortage of goals.
