Lloyd Jones opened the scoring for Charlton in the seventh minute after West Ham failed to deal with a long throw that bounced inside their penalty area. Tyreece Campbell doubled the advantage after the interval when Konstantinos Mavropanos lost possession close to his own box.
Former Wolves and Nottingham Forest manager Nuno said his side produced plenty of promising moments but lacked precision at both ends of the pitch. His team recorded more than 77% possession and an expected-goals figure of 2.96, compared with Charlton’s 0.57.
He acknowledged that the team must improve defensively, adding that they controlled much of the ball and attempted to find a way through a well-organised opponent.
Nuno also felt his players generated numerous opportunities and expressed confidence that they would become more clinical in future matches.
He expects his side to take the initiative and dominate possession this season. Training will focus on attacking combinations, individual duels and creating better goalscoring opportunities in the final third.
Nuno stressed the importance of persistent practice and maintaining confidence in the team’s approach as they regroup and look to respond positively.
West Ham return to action on Tuesday with a Carabao Cup fixture against Southampton, followed by league games against unbeaten Watford and Wolves.
