We have outlined the finest victories on foreign ground up to this point – yet that list omits several of England’s most remarkable achievements, including the undisputed greatest of them all.
This is, of course, England’s World Cup victory in 1966, when they overcame West Germany 4-2 after extra time at Wembley.
Geoff Hurst struck a hat-trick – the only instance of a player achieving this feat for the triumphant side in a World Cup final.
A number of England’s most treasured triumphs have occurred on home soil during major competitions.
During Euro 96, they delivered a famous 4-1 victory over the Netherlands to advance to the knockout phase at Wembley, giving supporters genuine belief that they could challenge for the trophy.
Then at Euro 2020, staged across the continent in 2021, they defeated Germany 2-0 at Wembley to progress to the last eight.
What about encounters on neutral ground? At the 2002 World Cup, England overcame another historic foe, Argentina, securing a 1-0 win in the group stage in Japan courtesy of a David Beckham spot-kick.
Other unforgettable World Cup successes include a 3-1 triumph over France in 1982 – featuring Bryan Robson’s goal after just 27 seconds – along with Gary Lineker’s hat-trick in a crucial 3-0 result against Poland in 1986 and a penalty-shootout victory over Colombia in 2018.
At Euro 2004, when England beat Croatia 4-2 with teenager Wayne Rooney netting twice, everything seemed possible.
And looking further back, we shouldn’t overlook the 9-3 defeat of Scotland in a 1961 British Home Championship fixture at Wembley, where Jimmy Greaves scored a hat-trick.
How would you rate the Mexico victory among these?
