World Cup 2026: Jordan Henderson still in contention for finals after arm surgery

World Cup World Cup 2026

Despite undergoing an operation on a fractured arm, Jordan Henderson has not been completely ruled out of appearing for England again at this World Cup.

The Brentford midfielder picked up the unusual injury when he landed awkwardly while trying to clear the advertising boards at the edge of the pitch following the 3-2 victory over Mexico.

Henderson, who did not feature in the last-16 contest at the Azteca Stadium, was stretchered off the field while receiving oxygen.

The 36-year-old shared on his social media account, external on Wednesday that he had undergone surgery in Kansas City, where England are based throughout the tournament.

It is believed that, while it might seem a long shot, Henderson could still be named in matchday squads for the remaining fixtures and the possibility of featuring in a protective cast is being examined.

“That just goes to show the kind of person and the character he is,” said Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers, when asked about Henderson’s influence around the camp.

“I am hopeful he can still stay involved with us for the rest of the tournament.

“He is not going to count himself out and neither are we. I think the faith he has in his own body, his ability, his self-belief and what he represents as a person is huge for our group.

“He is almost like the heartbeat of the squad. To see him smiling this morning and looking so happy no matter what has unfolded over the last 48 hours is really uplifting, and hopefully we can get him back out on the pitch as quickly as possible.”

Henderson will stay with the team for the remainder of the tournament.
