Xabi Alonso Pleased with Enzo Fernandez Despite Chelsea Midfielder Uncertainty

News

Head coach Xabi Alonso says Enzo Fernandez has displayed an “excellent mentality” since returning to Chelsea, despite ongoing uncertainty surrounding the midfielder’s future.

In late May, Chelsea reached an agreement with Fernandez’s representative, Javier Pastore, allowing the Argentina international to depart for £120m, with 14 August established as the deadline for offers.

No official proposal arrived before last Friday’s deadline, prompting the club to inform Fernandez’s representatives that he will not be available during the current transfer window.

Manchester City, led by Fernandez’s former Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca, remain interested in the 25-year-old and believe the London side may still be willing to negotiate.

However, Alonso suggested that Fernandez remains fully focused while Chelsea get ready to begin their Premier League campaign away to Fulham on Monday.

When asked at Thursday’s press conference whether Fernandez would remain at Stamford Bridge after the transfer window shuts on 1 September, Alonso replied: “Enzo remains a Chelsea player. We are pleased to have him, and he is preparing for Monday’s match.”

Alonso also said the 25-year-old has settled back into the squad smoothly following the World Cup and has performed strongly in training.

“From what I have seen, his mindset has been excellent, which is exactly what we expect,” he said.
