Manchester United have finalized the acquisition of Youri Tielemans in a transfer valued at around £35m, with the Belgian international signing a five-year contract and expressing his desire to help the team compete for the most prestigious honors.

The 29-year-old arrives from Aston Villa, becoming the second midfield addition in quick succession following the capture of 22-year-old Andrey Santos from Chelsea on Monday. That deal was worth £48m with an additional £2m in potential performance-related bonuses.

Tielemans shared: “It’s truly difficult to put into words the sense of pride I feel becoming a Manchester United player. Pulling on the shirt of such an iconic club is an incredible moment, representing the fulfillment of a long-held ambition ever since my earliest passion for the game began.

“Having already tasted victory in my career, my hunger to win more has only intensified. The collective drive within this club is unmistakable; together, we are committed to challenging for the game’s greatest prizes in the seasons ahead.”

Jason Wilcox, the club’s football director, commented: “Across the last seven seasons, Youri has firmly established himself as one of the Premier League’s elite midfield performers. He possesses every technical attribute, coupled with the determined mindset and aspiration, to excel at Manchester United.

“What sets Youri apart is his remarkable consistency, and he will bring an added layer of calm, imagination, and authority to our group. We are thrilled to secure a player of his impact and maturity, both during matches and behind the scenes, as we forge a squad capable of targeting the very top awards.”

With 90 appearances for Belgium, Tielemans captained his country at the recent World Cup, where their journey ended with a 2-1 quarter-final defeat to Spain last Friday. He initially moved to England with Leicester from Monaco in 2019 before making a free transfer to Villa four years later.

During the previous campaign, he found the net with Villa’s first goal in their 3-0 Europa League final triumph in Istanbul. Across that league season, he provided seven assists for his teammates, recorded the highest number of defensive line-breaking passes per 100 attempts among all midfielders and forwards, and ranked second for line-breaking passes made while under direct pressure.

His departure represents a significant blow for Villa, a situation compounded by the serious knee injury suffered by his fellow Belgian international Amadou Onana at the World Cup. Separately, Villa have revealed a new front-of-shirt partnership with Visit Rwanda, an organization that previously held a similar role with Arsenal. That prior arrangement attracted attention due to concerns surrounding Rwanda’s alleged backing of the M23 militia in conflicts within the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

United have also bolstered their goalkeeping department by adding 35-year-old Karl Darlow, who was a free agent after departing Leeds in June, to provide competition for first-choice Senne Lammens.
