Aston Villa have completed the signing of Brazil international João Gomes in a £38m transfer. The 25-year-old midfielder, who has won 10 caps, ends a three-and-a-half-year stay at Wolves, where he made 130 appearances after arriving from Flamengo.
Gomes’s move to Villa Park follows Youri Tielemans’s switch to Manchester United and comes as Morgan Rogers edges closer to a £117m transfer to Chelsea.
Matt Jackson, Wolves’ technical director, said: “João deserves everything he gets from the game. He’s the type of professional that coaches love and players love, so he will go on to be the outstanding player that we know he is.”
Manchester United are tracking Newcastle’s Lewis Hall and Fulham’s Antonee Robinson with a view to strengthening Michael Carrick’s options at left-back.
Carrick is determined to add a third midfielder after signing Andrey Santos and Tielemans, and is also weighing up a move for a left-back to provide competition for Luke Shaw.
Hall has impressed at St James’ Park since joining on an initial loan from Chelsea for the 2023-24 season, later sealing a £28m plus £7m in add-ons deal. The 21-year-old, who has four England caps, was considered unfortunate to miss out on Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad. His contract runs until June 2029.
Robinson moved to Fulham from Wigan for £2m in August 2020 and was part of Mauricio Pochettino’s USA squad, earning four appearances. He turns 29 next month, which is older than United’s preferred age profile, and his terms expire in June 2028.
Manchester United have signed 18-year-old winger Tynan Thompson from Tottenham for an initial fee of about £4m, with up to £4m more in performance-related add-ons. Spurs hold matching rights and a 15% sell-on clause.
Thompson, who has played seven times for England’s under-18s, scored 13 goals and provided six assists at youth level for Tottenham last season, including seven goals in seven UEFA Youth League outings.
Lisandro Martínez was forced off in the 41st minute of Argentina’s 1-0 World Cup final defeat by Spain due to injury. Manchester United are still evaluating the full extent of the issue.
