AC Milan midfielder Luka Modric, who will celebrate his 41st birthday in September, has agreed to a one-year contract extension.
The Croatian made the move to Milan the previous summer on a season-long agreement that included an option for an additional year, after departing Real Madrid.
Following a 13-year stint at the Bernabeu, Modric found the net twice in 37 outings for Milan during a campaign where the club placed fifth in Serie A and exited the Coppa Italia in the round of 16.
“I am delighted to remain at AC Milan, a place where I have felt embraced and appreciated since day one,” Modric stated regarding his fresh commitment.
“Following a season that fell short of what we aimed for, the hunger to recover is huge. A fresh campaign and a new challenge lie ahead—a vision I have faith in and that drives me.
“I am prepared to keep pouring everything into this jersey, and I feel immense pride in continuing to represent these colors. I cannot wait to step back into San Siro and hear the fans’ roar.”
Modric recently took part in his fifth World Cup, where Croatia were eliminated in the round of 32 by Portugal.
Since taking over as captain of the national side in 2016, Modric had previously guided Croatia to a runners-up finish and a third-place result at the World Cup.
The recipient of the 2018 Ballon d’Or secured six Champions League trophies and four La Liga crowns during his time at Real. Earlier in his career, he made 160 appearances over four years at Tottenham Hotspur in north London.
At Milan this term, he will be coached by former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, who took over in June after Massimiliano Allegri was dismissed.
In an official statement, Milan commented: “Since joining, Luka has been a central figure in the Rossoneri midfield, contributing his know-how and talent to the squad, both on the field and in the dressing room, with modesty and fierce dedication.
“One of the most distinguished and legendary names in global football, the Croatian will continue his path in the Rossoneri jersey, driven by the aim of achieving new, meaningful landmarks.”
