Having made 55 appearances across all competitions for Newcastle United, Anderson first stepped onto the pitch in an FA Cup loss to Arsenal in January 2021, then moved on a temporary deal to Bristol Rovers the following year.
That spell proved to be a crucial stage in his development — and included what may remain the most extraordinary game he has ever played.
Ex-Republic of Ireland midfielder Glenn Whelan, who served as player-coach at Bristol Rovers, still clearly recalls the impression Anderson — confident yet never cocky — left on the club in the West Country.
Recalling the young player’s arrival, Whelan said: “He just came into the building and showed his potential straight away. Nothing seemed to faze him. You could see straight away this boy was different.
“In my role as coach, I used to create certain situations in training to test him with a bit of pressure. Other youngsters might have been more cautious and retreated. Elliot was always on the attack. He grabbed the opportunity with both hands.”
According to Whelan, 5 February 2022 marked a key moment in Anderson’s growth.
“We were playing away at Sutton United,” he explained. “They were in good form and were a tough, physical side. A few of the staff were hesitant about putting him into that sort of contest.
“We were behind at the break and I told them we had to bring this kid on because he can turn a match. He came on and changed things – he earned a penalty and we earned a draw. From then on, I think he featured in almost every minute of the remaining games.”
Anderson’s mindset and resolve were remarkable as he shone for Bristol Rovers, culminating in a thrilling end to the campaign.
“He simply had the self-belief to demonstrate his ability to everyone,” Whelan noted. “It was never arrogance. Clearly, he had a strong family grounding and that typical Geordie character.
“He operated from the left flank, but if the service wasn’t reaching him, he’d go searching for possession. He wasn’t bothered by whoever was marking him. He could receive the ball under pressure and create something.
“Elliot relished training. He was eager to learn and do extra work. He had the desire to stay on the pitch and improve. We could see instantly that he was destined to be a top-level player.”
Anderson departed Bristol Rovers following one of the most memorable afternoons in the club’s story, as they secured promotion to League One on the last day of the season.
Entering the day, the Pirates had to either surpass Northampton’s result in third place or secure a victory by five more goals than their rivals. They triumphed 7-0, with Anderson scoring the last goal with five minutes left, lifting Rovers into the top three for the first time that season.
Anderson enjoyed a victorious send-off, hailed by the ecstatic Rovers fans.
