It is hardly unexpected that Martin has been tasked with winning promotion in what will be only Leicester’s second campaign in England’s third division during the club’s 142-year existence.
“The main objective is to earn promotion,” he said.
“[We also want] to adopt a style that everyone can understand, trust and connect with, while giving the supporters something to be proud of.”
However, the makeup of the squad expected to deliver those goals is still far from settled.
Much of the summer has involved moving on several prominent, highly paid players from the team that endured back-to-back relegations.
Denmark defender Jannik Vestergaard departed after his contract was ended by mutual agreement, former England midfielder Harry Winks joined Italian club Cagliari, and Abdul Fatawu’s move to Ipswich Town brought in £20m.
Leicester’s difficulties in meeting financial regulations, which resulted in a points deduction last season for previous violations, have also prompted the club to sell some of its brightest prospects, including 17-year-old Jeremy Monga to Manchester City, during the current transfer window.
A major overhaul at the end of the season saw 10 players leave when their contracts expired, with the departures of Patson Daka and Jordan Ayew leaving Leicester without an established senior striker.
Former Ipswich Town forward Conor Chaplin, who was the club’s leading scorer when they secured promotion from League One four seasons ago, is one of only two new arrivals since Leicester went down.
Martin said Leicester intend to strengthen their attacking options by recruiting players who can provide a variety of qualities.
“In an ideal situation, we would have two or three forwards,” he said. “We do not want several players who all bring identical qualities, and that applies to the wide positions as well.
“Regardless of the type of player we consider, they must suit what we are trying to build. They have to be genuinely eager to join, compete and contribute to the club’s success.”
