Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso says he has devised a way to use British-record £117m arrival Morgan Rogers alongside Cole Palmer and expects the England midfielder to make an immediate difference.
Rogers became the costliest British footballer in history after completing his transfer from Aston Villa to Stamford Bridge last week.
The 24-year-old is taking a break following his World Cup campaign with England, while Chelsea have started their pre-season trip in Sydney.
Alonso said the team required a major addition in that area of the pitch and that Rogers was among the strongest candidates available.
He added that players of Rogers’ quality can contribute straight away and predicted that the midfielder would quickly become accustomed to the club, its tactical approach and his new colleagues.
According to Alonso, the objective was to recruit an elite player, and Rogers fits that description.
Rogers has agreed to a six-year deal with Chelsea that also includes the possibility of an additional season.
Although Rogers has yet to join pre-season training, Alonso remains confident he will be prepared and can operate effectively alongside his England teammate Palmer.
The two players have referred to one another as among their closest friends in the sport, and Rogers has expressed his desire for them to share the pitch.
Discussing the partnership, Alonso said he already has a clear approach in mind and expects the pair to combine successfully.
He explained that Chelsea must find the correct blend and place their most gifted players in suitable roles. With greater balance and control, he believes the team can become stronger both in possession and when defending.
