Since taking charge, McArdle has consistently demonstrated his desire to strengthen Northern Ireland’s squad options, handing four players their first international appearances across the two matches against Portugal.
Among them was Elmore, who scored Northern Ireland’s only goal of the tie. She also became the second player to find the net on her debut under McArdle, following Emily Cassap’s goal in June’s 2-1 loss to Switzerland.
“I’m absolutely thrilled for Kess,” McArdle added.
“I was aware of what she could offer, so it was wonderful to see her make such a difference in Larne and receive the reward of scoring tonight.
“She will contribute a great deal to the squad in the future, as will many of the players who made their debuts this week. That was very encouraging.”
McArdle’s team faced a difficult international window without several important players, including captain Simone Magill and experienced quartet Laura Rafferty, Nadene Caldwell and Caragh Hamilton.
Despite those absences, the Scottish coach believes his players established an encouraging benchmark during the demanding contest with Portugal.
“Certain incidents did not fall our way, and we also suffered some unfortunate moments. We are trying to play an adventurous brand of football,” he said.
“We attacked with purpose from the opening whistle, and I could not be more proud of the players. This performance provides a highly encouraging foundation for the future and brings us nearer to the identity I want the team to develop.
“Our aim is to play with greater intensity and movement while becoming much more adaptable. I am extremely proud of the performance, although the final score remains deeply frustrating.”
