Argentina’s football governing body is marking the national team’s World Cup semi-final victory against England last month.
Following an executive board meeting on Wednesday, the Argentinian Football Association (AFA) designated 15 July—the date of the 2-1 triumph in Atlanta—as its “National Football Teams Day”.
“This date was selected to honour Argentina’s memorable World Cup semi-final success against England,” a statement published on the AFA’s official website said. “Lionel Scaloni’s squad fell one goal behind before Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez scored to complete the comeback, sparking jubilant celebrations throughout the country.
“However, the commemoration goes beyond the senior team’s achievement. It also celebrates all of Argentina’s national sides—including youth, men’s and women’s teams, futsal, beach soccer and field football—whose players train each day at the Lionel Andres Messi training centre with pride, enthusiasm and a strong sense of duty as they prepare to represent their country.”
Fifa has begun disciplinary action against the AFA after players displayed a banner following the match that asserted Argentina’s claim over the Falkland Islands.
Fifa is also examining the conduct of Argentina players Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina in connection with the altercation that erupted after the 1-0 loss to Spain in the World Cup final on 19 July. Assistant coach Roberto Ayala is under investigation over the same incident.
