A coroner has concluded that sudden adult death syndrome caused the death of former Manchester United player Mark Hughes’s son.
Alex Hughes was discovered unconscious at his home in Macclesfield, Cheshire, by his two sons on 19 June.
The 38-year-old followed his father, a former Wales international, into football and worked in recruitment for clubs including Grimsby Town and Manchester City. The inquest heard that paramedics were unable to resuscitate him.
After his death, Mark Hughes and his wife Jill said they were devastated by the unforeseen loss of their much-loved son.
Sudden adult death syndrome (SADS), sometimes called sudden arrhythmic syndrome, is recorded when a post-mortem cannot determine a cause of death because the heart appears structurally normal.
Around 500 people in the UK are affected by the condition each year.
According to a UK heart-health charity, SADS generally occurs when a dangerously irregular heart rhythm is not treated and results in cardiac arrest.
The charity also noted that undiagnosed inherited heart conditions are frequently linked to cases of SADS.
