Bath’s fixtures against Harlequins during the weekend of 15 May and Saracens on 5 June are expected to be relocated. If the club advances to the Prem semi-finals and earns home advantage next June, that match would also take place away from the Rec.
The club’s owners have said the project is being brought forward so the redevelopment can be finished before the 2028-29 Prem season begins.
Reading will play their final scheduled home fixture of the coming season against Sheffield Wednesday on 1 May. They could, however, stage an additional match later that month if they qualify for the League One play-offs.
The stadium has frequently hosted rugby before, serving as London Irish’s home ground from 2000 until 2020.
Couhig pointed to several improvements completed at the SCL Stadium this summer, including work on the stands and the installation of a new playing surface, as reasons why an arrangement with Bath could be practical.
“The new surface has been designed to withstand rugby matches and recover from them in a short period,” Couhig said.
“Our football side remains the primary tenant, and we would ensure that any arrangement is managed properly.”
He also said that all revenue raised through such an agreement would be invested back into the football squad.
“If we entered into an agreement with Bath Rugby, the SCMP salary regulations would permit us to allocate extra funds toward our football players,” he said.
