Police have opened an investigation into an alleged confrontation involving Cardiff defender Krystian Bielik and home fans during Portsmouth’s 2-0 Championship victory on Saturday.
The incident occurred late in the second half when Bielik entered into a physical dispute with a supporter while attempting to recover the ball from the crowd.
Hampshire Police were alerted during the match and began examining the circumstances shortly after the final whistle.
Police confirmed that they are looking into a report that a teenage boy was subjected to a common assault during the match at Fratton Park, adding that enquiries remain in progress.
A number of Portsmouth fans made gestures suggesting that they thought the young supporter had been held by the throat.
Cardiff head coach Brian Barry-Murphy later said Bielik had been struck in the face. Meanwhile, footage shared on social media appeared to show the Poland international holding a young supporter around the upper body.
Following the confrontation, a different supporter threw a ball that struck Cardiff defender Perry Ng on the head. Both fans were removed from the ground.
Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho offered an apology to the Cardiff City players after the match.
Portsmouth said in a statement:, external The club is aware of concerns raised by supporters about the incident involving a young fan and an opposing player during the previous day’s match at Fratton Park.
Because the case involves safeguarding concerns and is being investigated by both the club and the police, Portsmouth said it could not appropriately discuss the circumstances further.
The club also acknowledged that various allegations were being shared online and asked people to avoid speculation until the enquiries have concluded.
Portsmouth stressed that protecting the welfare of young people is a leading priority and said it would remain in contact with the relevant parties as the investigation develops.
The club added that it would not provide any further statement while the investigations are continuing.
The Football Association has been informed and will examine the referee’s match report before determining whether further action is necessary.
Cardiff City said it was content with how the match officials handled the incident, noting that they had a clear view of what happened. The club added that safeguarding its players would remain a top priority.
