Jimmy Rimmer, the former Aston Villa and Manchester United goalkeeper who lifted the European Cup, has passed away aged 78.
Born in Southport, Rimmer was among the substitutes when Manchester United defeated Benfica to claim the European Cup in 1968.
He was in Aston Villa’s starting line-up for their 1-0 victory against Bayern Munich in the 1982 European Cup final, but a neck problem forced him off after nine minutes, with Nigel Spink taking his place.
Rimmer featured in every match on Villa’s journey to that final, having also played throughout their successful 1980-81 league title campaign.
The goalkeeper recorded 229 league appearances for the Midlands side and also represented Swansea City and Arsenal. During the 1974-75 season, he was named Arsenal’s player of the year.
His international career included one England appearance, which came in a 1976 friendly against Italy.
Aston Villa and Manchester United expressed their profound sadness following his death, while Arsenal also honoured their former player.
Alex Stepney, Rimmer’s former Manchester United colleague and fellow goalkeeper, shared his sorrow online and sent his condolences and affection to Rimmer’s family.
