Martin O’Neill has indicated that he did not seriously consider leaving Celtic following three consecutive defeats, underlining his continued “strong enthusiasm” for the position.
The 74-year-old agreed to remain as manager for another year after two interim spells last season ended with Celtic winning both the league title and the Scottish Cup.
After suffering two losses against Rangers last month, with a 3-1 Europa League home defeat to Ferencvaros between them, O’Neill admitted that he briefly wondered whether it was time to step away.
Nevertheless, he said it did not take him long to decide to continue as he looked ahead to Sunday’s Premiership match at home to Motherwell.
“Naturally, I was unhappy with how that week unfolded,” he said. “I remained willing to carry on for as long as the club wanted me here.”
It has now been three weeks since Celtic’s 1-0 home defeat to Rangers, which marked their first loss of league points this season.
“Walking away at this point would not have been the right decision,” O’Neill added. “The defeats were obviously difficult to accept, but the international break gave me some time to think everything through.
“Without that break in the schedule, I probably would not have made those remarks in the first place.”
