Memphis Depay has accepted a lower salary to continue his career at Corinthians, just days after the Brazilian side opted not to extend his deal.
Last week, the former Manchester United attacker criticised Corinthians for what he described as “unacceptable conduct” after the club abandoned an extension that had previously been arranged for the two-year contract he signed in 2024.
Corinthians president Osmar Stabile has since revealed that the Netherlands international substantially lowered his financial expectations, allowing him to agree a new contract that will keep him at the Sao Paulo club until 2028.
“The situation has been resolved, although it required a lot of effort,” Stabile said. “Reaching an agreement with a player of international stature cannot be done overnight. The negotiations took time, but they ultimately ended successfully.
“We spoke with him directly, and he agreed to lower the figures beyond what his representatives had been able to negotiate. Our priority was securing the best possible outcome for Corinthians, particularly from a financial perspective.”
The 32-year-old has registered 20 goals across 79 matches for Corinthians. He also played a part in the club’s 2025 Copa do Brasil triumph and their Supercopa do Brasil victory this year.
Corinthians, currently ninth in Brazil’s Serie A, had initially chosen not to renew his contract because of concerns about the club’s financial position.
