Former England attacking midfielder Carney helped Arsenal achieve a remarkable quadruple in the 2006-07 season, securing the league title, FA Cup, League Cup and Uefa Women’s Cup, which preceded the Women’s Champions League.
After two seasons with Chicago Red Stars, she returned in 2011 to Birmingham City, the club where her career began. In the following season, Carney netted an extra-time equaliser as Birmingham went on to lift the FA Cup.
Carney joined Chelsea near the end of 2015 and helped the club claim both the WSL title and FA Cup in 2017-18. She later became club captain before retiring from professional football in 2019.
Carney made her senior England debut in 2005 at the age of 17. She recorded 32 goals across 144 appearances for the Lionesses and contributed to their third-place finish at the 2015 Women’s World Cup.
She featured for England at eight major competitions and also played for Great Britain at the 2012 Olympic Games.
Following her retirement, the 39-year-old moved into broadcasting and football analysis. She was also selected by the UK Government to lead an independent examination of the future of domestic women’s football, with the findings released in 2023.
