Gonzalez shared a strong bond with Rodri and always understood that only a small group of players are capable of securing a starting role in his position at clubs competing for major trophies.
Rodri filled that role for Manchester City under Guardiola. After the midfielder joined Barcelona, new head coach Enzo Maresca recruited Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille, adding him to a squad that already included former Nottingham Forest player Elliot Anderson.
The club also appear ready to submit an offer for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
Leaving Manchester City was nevertheless a difficult decision for Gonzalez because he was comfortable there, but Newcastle can provide the prominent role he has been seeking.
The energetic Spaniard regards the move as another chance to progress, with personal development consistently shaping his career choices.
“His attitude is outstanding,” Toure said. “I used to analyse matches separately with each player, and whenever I sat beside him with my laptop, he was always eager to absorb new information.
“He constantly asked me to explain things, and I was keen to support him because of how strongly he pursued improvement.
“These are the players every coach appreciates because they want to understand both their strengths and their mistakes, and they respond positively to constructive feedback.
“That mindset means he will continue getting better.”
Gonzalez demonstrated that capacity for growth after leaving Barcelona, where he began his senior career, and he can now draw upon the lessons gained from that experience.
After spending 10 years at Barcelona and progressing through its academy system, Gonzalez eventually realised that moving elsewhere was necessary to reach his full potential.
A productive loan period with Valencia was followed by a permanent transfer to Porto when he was 21, before his performances earned him a move to Manchester City.
Roger Riera, who previously played alongside him for Barcelona B, believes those experiences have given Gonzalez “a different perspective.”
“Nico has experienced football in several countries and under contrasting tactical approaches,” he said. “He has introduced many new qualities into his play, turning himself into a more rounded footballer.
“He is now a far more complete player.”
