Chelsea’s collapse against Brighton & Hove Albion last April may eventually be remembered as a decisive moment. That embarrassing defeat hastened Liam Rosenior’s departure and prompted the Stamford Bridge leadership to reassess its plans, resulting in Xabi Alonso’s arrival, a revised recruitment approach, the JP Morgan attacking trio and Robert Sánchez losing his position as first-choice goalkeeper.
Even so, it is too early to describe Emiliano Martínez as the player who completes the team. Alonso’s reshaped Chelsea can be exciting, particularly when Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and João Pedro combine effectively in attack, but several weaknesses persist. Initial performances indicate that a genuine title bid will require greater composure and consistency.
Alonso appeared furious as Chelsea struggled to protect their advantage midway through the second half. His players had opened the match at a remarkable pace and scored three times without reply against a depleted Brighton side, only for their intensity to fade. Nervousness briefly spread around Stamford Bridge, but Palmer restored control late on, moving inside before producing an excellent finish to secure a 4-2 scoreline. Chelsea have won their opening matches under Alonso, although the games have been more unpredictable than he would prefer.
Allowing five goals across the first two league fixtures remains a concern. Martínez delivered a strong performance on his debut following a £7.5m transfer from Aston Villa, but he was unable to keep a clean sheet. Brighton identified flaws in Chelsea’s structure, leaving Alonso with a clear need to bring greater control to the team.
