With Hogh unavailable, having scored three goals in five outings for Celtic since his move from Bodo/Glimt, fellow high-profile summer signing Camilo Duran has impressed in the central attacking role.
The Colombian forward has struck six times in eight games this season. Asked whether Hogh’s comeback could see Duran return to the wing, O’Neill explained that the priority is to put the strongest possible lineup on the pitch.
Celtic will also be without winger Yang Hyun-jun against St Johnstone, with the South Korean international away competing at the Asian Games.
O’Neill believes the 24-year-old, who is expected to miss the club’s next four fixtures, will be a significant absence. Celtic face two derbies with Rangers, separated by a Europa League opener against Ferencvaros, after Wednesday’s match.
The experienced manager praised Yang’s outstanding ability in possession and highlighted the importance of the goals he has contributed.
He also commended the winger’s effort when Celtic do not have the ball, saying his commitment and work rate have been excellent throughout O’Neill’s time at the club.
Celtic return to away action on Sunday, making the short journey to Govan to meet their city rivals at Ibrox at 12:00 BST.
Despite the upcoming Premier Sports Cup quarter-final, O’Neill refused to look beyond the immediate challenge and stressed that Wednesday’s fixture carries greater importance.
The 74-year-old said his full attention must remain on preparing his team for the game in front of them.
He added that Celtic must focus on defending their title and doing everything possible to secure another victory.
In his view, Wednesday’s contest is considerably more important than the match scheduled for Sunday.
