Kevin Kelsy is expected to be considered for selection after joining from MLS club Portland Timbers.
The Venezuelan was handed an excellent chance to make an immediate impression on his debut against Motherwell after Jake Girdwood-Reich made a mistake, but he lacked composure and sent his effort wide from 10 yards.
It would be premature to assess whether Kelsy can replace Shankland, although his record of 13 goals across his previous 46 appearances, at an average of one every 190 minutes, indicates that he may not be a prolific centre-forward.
Former Ibrox midfielder Ian McCall said Rangers wasted too many opportunities, especially after the interval. He also expressed concern about Shankland’s injury and questioned whether Kelsy or Naderi possesses the instincts of a natural finisher.
Following the predictable and ineffective attacking displays seen during the early European qualifiers, McInnes could take encouragement from the Motherwell victory, in which his team played with greater intent and produced several high-quality chances.
With Shankland expected to be unavailable for a period, Rangers must find another player capable of converting those opportunities.
