Arsenal’s Kyra Cooney-Cross Will Dedicate Emirates Comeback to Her Mother

Cooney-Cross is regarded as one of Australia’s most promising players. She made her senior international debut at the age of 19 and has since earned 63 caps, including starts in all seven games at the 2023 World Cup on home soil.

She explained that training in Australia while staying close to her family gave her a valuable break from the difficult emotions she was experiencing.

“From Monday through Friday, I worked on the pitch with a personal coach and also had access to a gym,” she said.

“Training became a form of relief for me. It gave me a sense of freedom and helped me step away from everything happening outside football.

“I kept going because I knew it was what my mother would have wanted. I was also determined to return for the new season in the best condition possible.”

Coming back to football following a six-month absence can be intimidating for any player, but the midfielder described the support she received from Arsenal throughout that period as “incredible”.

Head coach Renee Slegers and women’s football director Claire Wheatley remained in frequent contact, while team-mates Alessia Russo and Taylor Hinds provided important emotional support.

“It is during moments like these that you truly need others, and the people who genuinely love and care for you will stand by your side,” Cooney-Cross said.

“Leaving my family was painful, but I also knew I was prepared to return. I had to find the courage to take that step, and I am very grateful I did because everyone has treated me wonderfully.

“Football has helped occupy my mind, and the support I have received made the transition much easier.. I am fortunate to have caring people around me.”

Cooney-Cross remained on the bench during Arsenal’s first match of the season against Brighton. Her mother last watched her play at the Emirates, and the midfielder hopes to honour her when she returns to the ground this weekend.

“She always knew exactly what to write in her messages, and there is one text I read before each match. Her words are incredibly beautiful. I often reflect on how I live and consider what she might have said or done.

“She has always been a major source of my motivation and sense of purpose, and that feeling is even stronger now. I want to perform at my best in her honour and bring some happiness to my family during such a sorrowful time.”
