Sam Surridge struck in the first minute of second-half added time to earn visiting Nashville SC a 2-2 draw against Inter Miami on Saturday night.
It was Surridge’s second goal of the match and his 15th of the campaign. After Dayne St Clair stopped Shak Mohammed’s effort, Surridge reacted quickly and converted the rebound, allowing Eastern Conference leaders Nashville to claim a point away to second-placed Miami.
His late finish wiped out Lionel Messi’s 62nd-minute strike, which was his league-leading 19th goal of the season and his 99th in all competitions for Inter Miami. After receiving Rodrigo De Paul’s pass just outside the penalty area, Messi curled a powerful left-footed shot beyond Nashville goalkeeper Brian Schwake to put Miami 2-1 ahead.
Miami nearly regained the lead in the fourth minute of stoppage time, but De Paul’s shot hit the left post with what proved to be the final touch of the game.
Although Messi had put his side in front with fewer than 30 minutes left, Surridge’s equalizer condemned Miami to a third consecutive draw and left them with only one victory from their last eight league fixtures.
Nashville also stretched their unbeaten run against Miami to four matches in all competitions.
Sporting KC halt winless spell with unexpected victory over LAFC
André Luiz registered the first MLS goal of his career, while Stefan Cleveland produced six saves as Sporting Kansas City secured a surprise 3-1 home victory against Los Angeles FC on Saturday night.
Taylor Calheira and Jacob Bartlett were also on target for Kansas City, who ended a three-match losing run and recorded their first win since 22 July.
Denis Bouanga scored Los Angeles’ only goal as their four-game unbeaten run came to an end. Hugo Lloris made five saves, but his team conceded three times for the first time since their 3-2 defeat by Nashville on 17 May.
Antoine Griezmann leads Orlando City to a third consecutive victory
Antoine Griezmann found the net for the fifth match in a row as Orlando City claimed their third successive win with a 3-0 home triumph over Toronto FC on Saturday.
Orlando extended their unbeaten sequence to five matches. Toronto, meanwhile, suffered their first loss since 25 July, bringing their seven-game unbeaten run to an end.
The momentum changed repeatedly during the opening half, with both teams creating chances.
Griezmann’s skill gave the Lions the breakthrough in first-half stoppage time. Zakaria Taifi noticed the French forward moving toward the goalmouth and delivered a pass from the right, which Griezmann met with his left foot and lifted beneath the crossbar for a 1-0 advantage.
Rookie forward Harvey Sarajian scored the first MLS goal of his career in the 82nd minute to double Orlando’s lead. The 21-year-old collected a short pass from Daryl Dike on the right before guiding his finish inside the far post.
Ivan Angulo completed the 3-0 victory with a strike from the edge of the goal area in the sixth minute of second-half added time.
