The former coach split supporter opinion throughout his five years in charge, yet he still delivered the club’s first major honour by winning the FA Cup. He also reached three additional cup finals, secured two top-three league finishes and guided the side to last season’s Women’s Champions League quarter-finals.
He left after appearing to express dissatisfaction with limited squad investment, echoing the concerns of predecessor Casey Stoney, who resigned in 2021.
Some believe Skinner achieved more than expected despite having fewer resources available than United’s main competitors.
The club’s training facilities have faced criticism in recent years, while remarks about the women’s side from owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe also prompted a negative reaction.
Olid was appointed to nurture young talent and establish an attacking style of play, and she maintained that the team’s winless opening needed to be viewed in context.
She told the players that they were still only at the start of the journey.
She stressed that only two games had been played and that the final outcome mattered more than the opening results. The immediate priority, she added, was for the players to correct their errors, develop and steadily raise their level.
