Christian Eriksen has departed Wolfsburg following a mutual agreement, a little more than three months after he collapsed in Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine.
The former Manchester United midfielder had been under contract with the German second-division club until June 2027.
The 34-year-old previously experienced a cardiac arrest while representing Denmark against Finland in their opening European Championship group fixture in Copenhagen in 2021.
Eriksen said that being near his family in Denmark is currently his main priority and expressed satisfaction that an agreement had been reached by all parties.
He described his spell at Wolfsburg as a period filled with both positive and difficult moments, adding that he believes the club is well placed to pursue promotion to the Bundesliga and enjoy future success.
Eriksen has not featured since June. He signed for Wolfsburg as a free agent one year ago following his departure from Manchester United and went on to make 34 appearances.
The Denmark international, who has earned 151 caps, has also represented Ajax, Tottenham, Inter Milan and Brentford during his career.
Wolfsburg’s managing director for sport, Dieter Hecking, said in a statement that the final decision regarding Eriksen’s future needed to remain with the player.
Hecking explained that the club wanted to give Eriksen the necessary freedom under the circumstances and therefore accepted his request to end the contract.
He added that, despite spending only a short period at Wolfsburg, Eriksen made a memorable impact on his fellow players, club employees and supporters.
