With captain Andy Robertson expected to collect his 98th cap at left wing-back and Aaron Hickey likely to operate on the opposite flank, questions remain over how Scotland will use their wide attackers.

Ben Gannon-Doak became an important player under Clarke because of his pace and skill in one-on-one situations. Josh McPake has displayed comparable qualities for Hearts on that wing.

Pocognoli, however, often prefers two inside forwards positioned around a central striker, with the wing-backs providing width. That approach could leave Scotland’s traditional wingers without a natural place.

One of the attacking positions would appear well suited to John McGinn, whose scoring ability, powerful running and familiarity with a similar role on the left make him a strong option. His work without possession is another advantage.

Ryan Christie could also be considered for one of those spots if Scotland select only two defensive midfielders from their extensive group, potentially Lewis Ferguson and Billy Gilmour. The Bournemouth player also contributes tirelessly when his team is out of possession.

Another possibility is moving Gannon-Doak or McPake higher up the field and closer to the main striker. The key issue would be whether either player has the defensive awareness required to move into central areas when Scotland are defending.

Gannon-Doak was listed among the forwards in the squad, whereas McPake was notably classified as a midfielder. It is unclear whether those labels offer any tactical clues, but Pocognoli’s plans for both players will be worth watching.
