Real Mallorca goalkeeper Iván “Pichu” Cuéllar sustained a severe head injury after a large decorative structure fell on him in the canteen at the club’s training complex.
The incident occurred at the Ciutat Esportiva Antonio Asensio, also called Son Bibiloni, before Monday’s scheduled training session. Cuéllar was subsequently transported to hospital.
Mallorca later confirmed that the 42-year-old was making a positive recovery. Medical staff continued to assess him and found no signs of additional complications.
In an official statement, the club explained that Cuéllar had suffered a serious head injury when a large structure used as dining-room decoration collapsed. He received hospital treatment and was expected to remain under observation for 24 hours.
The Palma-based side, coached by former Espanyol striker Luis García, are preparing to face Girona in the Spanish second division on Sunday. The two clubs were relegated from La Liga last season and have each collected 13 points from seven matches this campaign.
Cuéllar’s absence limits García’s alternatives in goal because Lucas Bergström is currently representing Finland on international duty. Arnau Tenas, the team’s first-choice goalkeeper this season, is the only senior option available after his mistake resulted in the decisive goal during Sunday’s 1-0 home loss to Almería.
