Brown’s brace was a fitting reward for a player whose consistent performances stretch well beyond this campaign. He also played a key role in a five-man defence that secured its third successive clean sheet.
Brodie Spencer and Terry Devlin came into the side at full-back and both performed strongly, while Brown’s fellow central defenders, McConville and Tom Atcheson, were particularly impressive.
McConville, the 21-year-old Norwich City defender, controlled his area with authority. He provided the assist for Brown and later let the ball cross the line for his team-mate’s third goal, despite having the opportunity to finish it himself.
Atcheson, who is only 20 and represents Blackburn Rovers in the Championship, made his Northern Ireland debut against Wales in March and displayed maturity well beyond his age.
O’Neill described both defenders as “outstanding” and said their potential had no obvious limit.
He believes that although they currently compete in the Championship, both players are capable of progressing to a higher level.
O’Neill acknowledged that occasional errors are inevitable and that significant physical demands have been placed on the pair, but he praised both of them for delivering excellent performances.
The manager was equally pleased for Brown, saying the defender had developed into a senior figure while injured Sunderland centre-back Dan Ballard was unavailable.
O’Neill noted that completing three full matches at this standard was a demanding task for the 28-year-old.
He added that Brown’s ability exceeds the level at which he currently plays his club football in League One.
Brown contributes significantly to the team and, as its most experienced player that evening, embraced the responsibility of a leadership role.
