Robbie Savage has officially been appointed as the new manager of League One strugglers Peterborough.
Savage has departed National League club Forest Green Rovers to join Posh on a long-term deal. Peterborough sit second from bottom of the table and dismissed Luke Williams last month. This is Savage’s first managerial position in the Football League since ending his playing career in 2011, and he is eager to silence those who question his appointment.
“People are free to have their opinions, but I have always asked only for an opportunity,” Savage said. “After Manchester United released me, I was told I was not good enough. When I joined Leicester, I had to fight for a place in the team. Nothing in my life has been handed to me—I have earned it through hard work.
“Assess me once the football begins because that is what I care about most. I bring passion and emotion, and I want to see this young side give everything while playing an energetic and attacking style.”
Savage began his coaching career with Macclesfield, guiding the club to promotion to National League North before joining Forest Green in 2025. He is due to meet the Peterborough squad for the first time on Sunday and will then oversee Tuesday’s Football League Trophy match against Ipswich Under-21s.
Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony said: “Excitement is the best way to describe Robbie Savage’s arrival as our new manager, and it is not a feeling I have associated with the club for quite some time. We need his personality, character and mentality throughout the organisation. Nobody will put in more effort than Robbie to help us recover. He made a huge impression on the board during a detailed interview, and I am particularly encouraged by his determination to solve our problems and restore confidence within this talented squad.”
