Newcastle are on the verge of securing Sean Steur from Ajax for a fee in the region of £23 million. At just 18 years of age, the two-footed central midfielder has generated considerable excitement in Amsterdam, with many regarding him as the club’s most promising midfield prospect since Frenkie de Jong.
De Jong departed for Barcelona in 2019, and Steur, who is comfortable operating as either a No 6 or a No 8, now appears firmly headed for Tyneside. He is expected to begin next season vying with Lewis Miley for the central midfield berth that Sandro Tonali previously occupied, and will be afforded time to adapt to the physical demands of the Premier League.
With Tonali’s switch to Tottenham finalized in a deal that could eventually net Newcastle £100 million, Eddie Howe is reshaping his squad. Steur started last season in Ajax’s youth setup, went on to break into the senior side, and recorded 25 first-team appearances, quickly earning a reputation as one of the Eredivisie’s standout young prospects. The Netherlands Under-19 international’s rapid rise has not gone unnoticed.
Beyond his imminent arrival, Newcastle remain in the hunt for Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi, available from Freiburg for roughly £51 million, and have already added winger Bazoumana Touré from Hoffenheim in a £43 million deal. Touré has been brought in to fill the void left by Anthony Gordon, who completed a transfer to Barcelona in May.
