Enzo Maresca has disclosed that he held several personal conversations with Phil Foden in an effort to help the midfielder rediscover his finest form. Foden endured a difficult period over the previous two seasons, but four goals in his last two appearances have raised hopes that he can return to the level that earned him the Professional Footballers’ Association players’ player of the year honour in 2023-24.
City visit Aston Villa on Saturday lunchtime as they look to maintain their flawless start to the Premier League campaign under Maresca. Erling Haaland is available after remaining on the bench during Wednesday’s Champions League victory over AEK Athens.
“Since our work began, I have spoken privately with Phil two or three times, particularly during the early stages,” said Maresca, who previously worked with Foden while serving as Pep Guardiola’s assistant. “Love may not be the most suitable word, but I wanted to make clear just how important he is.”
“I have often said that I have known Phil for many years, so I understand the quality he possesses. For various reasons, he did not reach the required standard over the last couple of seasons. However, having more players of Phil’s ability available makes the team stronger. Ultimately, the objective is to develop individual players because improving them also improves the entire side. I believe it is my responsibility to help Phil become one of England’s leading players again. That said, it cannot be judged on a single match because the season is a long one.”
Foden, 26, must produce consistently strong performances to retain his position, with significant competition for places in attack. Among his rivals is Rayan Cherki, whom Maresca has called “one of the finest players in Europe”.
City’s sole competitive loss under Maresca was against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. They have also recorded seven consecutive Premier League victories and hold a three-point advantage at the top of the table. Maresca is awaiting updates on Matheus Nunes, Mateo Kovacic and Nico O’Reilly after all three missed the match against AEK. “The atmosphere is positive and we are pleased with the way we have started, but we remain determined to secure more victories,” Maresca said.
