Fifteen of the 20 clubs that competed in the Premier League last season were included in the top 30 of Deloitte’s 2026 Money List.
That financial advantage helps explain why English teams often look significantly stronger than their opponents in the Europa League and Conference League.
Premier League clubs receive more than £1.37bn in television revenue each season, roughly equal to the combined total earned by La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1.
Brighton are comfortably the wealthiest team in this season’s Conference League, while Bournemouth and Crystal Palace were both ranked among last season’s top 30.
Aston Villa comfortably defeated Freiburg in last season’s Europa League final while generating more than twice the revenue of the German club.
Crystal Palace lifted the Conference League after overcoming Rayo Vallecano in the final, with revenue close to four times that of their Spanish opponents.
Tottenham defeated Manchester United in the 2025 Europa League final, despite the two clubs finishing 17th and 15th respectively in the Premier League.
West Ham provided another example in 2022-23, winning the Conference League despite ending their domestic campaign in 14th place.
The available evidence highlights the Premier League’s overall depth. Once Europe’s wealthiest clubs are excluded, English teams hold a clear advantage.
The summer transfer market offered further proof of that financial superiority, as Premier League spending reached a record £3.49bn and far exceeded the totals recorded by competing leagues.
Only six of the summer’s 20 most expensive transfers involved players moving somewhere other than an English top-flight club.
Even Premier League teams outside the established big six are now beating leading European clubs in the race to recruit players.
Higher salaries and the competition’s growing appeal have made the Premier League an increasingly attractive destination for talent from across Europe.
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire said in August that, apart from major global names such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG and Bayern Munich, Premier League clubs have the resources to outspend virtually any rival.
He added that the salaries available in England are persuading a substantial number of overseas players to choose the Premier League over other European competitions.
