Martin O’Neill believes Colby Donovan has an exceptionally bright career ahead after the Celtic full-back agreed a contract extension through 2031.
The 20-year-old, who made his senior debut last August, has started 15 matches for the Scottish champions this season.
He received his first call-up to the Scotland squad in September but did not play in any of the four Nations League fixtures under new head coach Sebastien Pocognoli.
Speaking to Celtic’s official media, O’Neill said Donovan stepped up when the team needed him, gave his full commitment and displayed an outstanding attitude.
O’Neill also said he understands Donovan’s affection for Celtic and how much the new agreement means to both the player and his family.
The manager expects the defender to keep developing and build an impressive career, adding that he is delighted Donovan has committed his long-term future to Celtic.
After making 27 appearances last season, Donovan has become O’Neill’s first-choice replacement for the injured Alistair Johnston.
Donovan said he has enjoyed every moment so far but remains determined to continue working hard and improving.
He explained that academy players at Celtic must trust in their ability, even when the club recruits new talent.
Donovan added that, from a young age, he always believed he could progress through the club’s ranks and succeed.
