Aaron Ramsdale: Why Has the Former Arsenal Goalkeeper Struggled at Southampton?

News

Southampton manager Tonda Eckert appears to have indicated that Ramsdale does not feature in his plans this season. Daniel Peretz is currently his preferred goalkeeper, George Long is the backup, while Jamie Jones has returned primarily to assist with training.

“The situation involving Rambo at this club began before I arrived,” Eckert told a local radio station.

“We held open and direct discussions from the opening day of pre-season through to the transfer deadline.

“He understands that his responsibility is to help the squad in every possible way, and he has handled that role with great professionalism.”

Although Ramsdale has yet to be involved this season, he reportedly maintains positive relationships with Eckert, the coaching team and his fellow goalkeepers, while continuing to feel strongly connected to the club.

The goalkeeper also feels he can earn another opportunity in the starting side at St Mary’s and is prepared to compete for his position until at least January, when the winter transfer market begins.

He received summer loan proposals from teams in England, Spain and Italy but chose not to accept them. His immediate aim is to help Southampton secure promotion to the Premier League and return to top-level football.

Ramsdale is a respected presence among his teammates and remains popular with Southampton fans, but personal circumstances also influenced his decision over a potential fourth move in as many years.

His wife recently welcomed their second child, and the family is comfortable living locally. Ramsdale would therefore consider leaving only if the right opportunity became available.

Begovic believes his former teammate will be finding the continued absence of regular football extremely challenging and disappointing.

“There were brief periods in my career when I was left out at a club, although my experience was not quite the same as Aaron’s,” he said.

“Some aspects of the situation are probably beyond his control. For now, he must continue working hard in training, maintain his fitness and be prepared whenever an opportunity to play appears.

“He needs to remain prepared for what lies ahead so that, if an opportunity to join another team emerges, he can take it.

“I would be delighted to see Aaron playing regularly again, and I hope that can happen in January, although I understand that resolving the situation will not be simple.”
