Motsepe started his assessment of preparations for Afcon 2027 in Tanzania before travelling to Kenya. In Nairobi, he reviewed two venues: Kasarani Stadium and the recently built Talanta Stadium, which can accommodate 60,000 spectators.
Kasarani Stadium and its accompanying training facility are understood to be among the primary concerns in Kenya.
The venue is also scheduled to stage the 2029 World Athletics Championships after Nairobi was selected on Tuesday ahead of London and Rome.
During Caf’s previous assessment in mid-February, local organisers were advised that the stadiums and related training sites should reach approximately 80% completion by August.
Despite that target, only modest progress has been made at Kasarani during the past seven months, and several sections still need significant work.
A major issue is the pitch, which has not yet been installed. Further improvements are also needed to broadcast cabling, floodlighting and the stadium’s hospitality boxes.
Motsepe also highlighted the logistical pressure of accommodating hundreds of VIPs and national leaders, noting that certain stadium layouts may have to be redesigned.
The 64-year-old said the original plans must be adjusted to address security concerns surrounding the seating arrangements for distinguished visitors, particularly heads of state.
Kenya’s cabinet secretary for sports, Salim Mvurya, maintained that all preparations would be finished within the required timeframe.
Mvurya pledged that work on Afcon 2027 preparations would be accelerated for both Caf and the Kenyan public.
He added that every project would be completed by December, allowing test matches to take place at the different venues.
