Africa Cup of Nations: CAF Discusses Reversing Move Away from Biennial Schedule

News

The Africa Cup of Nations may remain a biennial competition as talks continue over abandoning the proposed move to a four-year schedule.

At a Confederation of African Football (CAF) strategy conference in Cape Verde on Friday, president Patrice Motsepe confirmed that the issue had been discussed in recent days.

He said all options were being considered, including restoring the tournament’s two-year cycle, and stressed that the proposal remained under review.

The competition has been organised every two years since 1968, apart from the single-year interval separating the 2012 and 2013 tournaments.

In December 2025, however, CAF announced plans to hold the event once every four years following the 2027 tournament in East Africa and the subsequent 2028 edition.

The proposed scheduling change drew significant criticism throughout the continent.

National football associations expressed concerns about reduced exposure for their teams, potential commercial consequences and the competition’s place within the global football calendar.
