An unexpected friendship has developed into an unusual collaboration, as American rock group Wheatus has become the sponsor of a Worcestershire junior football team.
Worcester-based Nunnery Wood U13s Phoenix now play in shirts featuring the Teenage Dirtbag band’s logo after coach Graham contacted the musicians to ask for their backing.
The relationship started when Graham and his son Bertie, who are both admirers of the band, met its members at a concert in Gloucester and continued communicating with them afterward.
Graham said he believed the Wheatus logo would look great on a football jersey, so he boldly asked the group whether they would sponsor the team, and they agreed.
Graham has followed Wheatus since the release of their self-titled first album in 2000, and in 2023 he won tickets to meet the six-member group at Gloucester Guildhall.
After sharing the band’s music with Bertie, Graham wanted to bring his son to the event, but Bertie was not old enough to attend at that time.
