Football’s global governing body has launched a disciplinary inquiry into the altercations that erupted after Sunday’s championship match, with multiple Argentine players potentially facing suspensions.
Nahuel Molina was seen striking Spain’s captain Rodri in the midsection as he entered the field following the final whistle, while a significant confrontation unfolded at midfield, where Leandro Paredes appeared to seize Eric García by the neck before throwing Gavi to the turf.
Parades was subsequently issued a red card by the official Slavko Vincic, who had also dismissed Enzo Fernández near the close of regulation, in addition to cautioning three other Argentine players and the team manager, Lionel Scaloni.
“After reviewing the pertinent match reports from the final between Spain and Argentina, and in accordance with article 36 of the disciplinary code, the judicial body has designated a prosecutor to examine potential violations of the code related to the post-match events,” the organization announced in a release.
The governing body is also examining Argentina’s behavior after their last-four victory over England, when their squad celebrated with a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” which was brought into the venue by fans.
The organization forbids players or teams from making political declarations, so those connected to the incident could face bans.
