German side Bochum have prohibited fans from jumping together in one section of their stadium after movement in the stand caused some spectators to feel unwell.
Engineers assessed the structure during preparations for improvements to the Ruhrstadion and confirmed that it could safely support the required weight. However, their findings showed that coordinated jumping during games produced a “trampoline effect” in the stand, potentially causing discomfort for people unfamiliar with the sensation.
The second-tier club announced on Wednesday that coordinated movement in the East Stand’s standing section would no longer be permitted from 11 October. The venue holds approximately 26,000 spectators.
“VfL is disappointed that these measures are necessary, but pleased that the East Stand can remain fully open as long as supporters respect the jumping restriction,” the club said in a statement.
“Thankfully, renovation of the East Stand is already included in the stadium modernisation project. This avoids an extended planning procedure and means the restriction can be removed once the scheduled work is completed in 2028.”
