Bruno Fernandes Calls Absent Cristiano Ronaldo ‘Portugal’s Greatest Symbol’

News

Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes has insisted that Cristiano Ronaldo remains the most important figure in the nation’s football history, despite leaving the squad after learning he would not be selected to start a match this week.

Ronaldo, 41, departed the camp after coach Jorge Jesus informed him that he would not be in the starting line-up against Denmark. Portugal went on to secure a 4-2 victory in his absence.

The former Real Madrid and Manchester United attacker holds Portugal’s records for both appearances and goals, having scored 146 times in 234 games. He also helped his country claim Euro 2016 and two Nations League titles.

Nevertheless, uncertainty now surrounds his future with the national side.

Speaking at Portugal’s news conference on Saturday, Fernandes revealed that he had discussed the situation directly with Ronaldo.

Fernandes said that whatever happens next, Ronaldo’s status as the leading symbol of Portugal’s national team, football culture and wider identity will remain unchanged because of everything he has achieved at home and around the world.

He added that Ronaldo has earned a permanent place among the game’s greatest players and in the affections of the Portuguese public, stressing that the situation should not create divisions.

Fernandes maintained that the national squad remains united and will continue to stand together, regardless of outside speculation or controversy.

He also urged supporters across Portugal not to take opposing sides and instead to respect every viewpoint, saying Ronaldo will continue to be the national team’s biggest icon and deserves recognition from everyone, regardless of personal opinion.

Portugal first lifted the Nations League trophy in 2019 and retained the title in 2025 by defeating Spain on penalties after a 2-2 draw, with Ronaldo scoring one of Portugal’s goals in the final.

At this summer’s World Cup, Portugal advanced to the last 16 before suffering a 1-0 defeat by eventual winners Spain. Then-manager Roberto Martinez faced criticism for seldom replacing Ronaldo, even when the forward was struggling to influence matches.

Jesus, who previously coached Ronaldo at Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, succeeded Martinez ahead of the Nations League campaign.

Portugal opened their campaign with a 1-0 home victory over Wales, with Ronaldo featuring for the first 67 minutes. He remained on the bench throughout the 2-1 away win against Norway before leaving the squad ahead of the Denmark fixture.
