Boehly remains Chelsea’s chairman, but a representative selected by Clearlake is scheduled to take over the position at the end of the season. This change was agreed when the consortium purchased the club from Roman Abramovich for £2.3bn in 2022.
The move would further limit Boehly’s authority. He was initially the most visible figure in the takeover and later worked as interim sporting director during the ownership group’s first transfer window.
Eghbali has emerged as Chelsea’s leading decision-maker since 2023 and has played a significant role in transfer activity. Meanwhile, several senior officials departed during the ownership’s first two years.
Certain figures within Chelsea and the ownership group have downplayed suggestions of a dispute, pointing to occasions when the two men attended important matches together, including Chelsea’s FA Cup final loss to Manchester City.
However, discussions over whether to renovate Stamford Bridge or relocate to a new ground have created friction.
Boehly’s team and Clearlake are both believed to support leaving the existing location, but they differ over the proposed stadium’s size and design. Boehly alluded to these disagreements during an interview last March.
“We need to consider our long-term objectives and what we want to achieve,” he said.
“There is a major stadium project that still needs to be fully developed. It will determine whether we can reach an agreement or eventually choose separate paths.”
Chelsea, along with representatives of Boehly, Walter and Clearlake, chose not to provide a response.
