Chelsea Strike Gold With Morgan Rogers as Arsenal Miss Out

Chelsea believed they had almost no hope of recruiting Morgan Rogers when the summer began. Xabi Alonso and the recruitment department had identified the England international as a leading target, but completing a transfer appeared unrealistic. After a poor campaign in which Chelsea finished 10th and failed to qualify for Europe, the club expected Rogers to leave Aston Villa for Arsenal.

Chelsea learned near the end of the World Cup that an opportunity might be emerging. Arsenal had strengthened their position as London’s leading side by winning the Premier League, but their hesitation during negotiations with Villa created an opening for another club.

Following Arsenal’s Champions League final defeat against Paris Saint-Germain, Mikel Arteta spoke about taking an ambitious approach to recruitment. He wanted additional attacking quality, particularly on the left. With Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli available for transfer, Arsenal appeared ready to pursue Rogers at the end of June.

The situation gradually became less clear. Arsenal valued Rogers at about £80m, while Villa demanded a larger sum, especially after Nottingham Forest sold Elliot Anderson to Manchester City for £116m. Negotiations stalled and doubts grew over Arsenal’s commitment. The club was also considering Julián Alvarez, Vinícius Júnior and Bradley Barcola. As Villa waited, Rogers’ asking price increased. Arsenal ultimately missed their chance and will see what might have been when Rogers arrives at the Emirates Stadium with Chelsea on Sunday.

Chelsea acted with conviction. They had monitored Rogers even before his February 2024 move from Middlesbrough to Villa. Joe Shields, one of the club’s five sporting directors, previously worked with him in Manchester City’s academy, so the transfer was carefully planned. Chelsea’s positive relationship with Villa’s owners helped them move quickly, with direct negotiations beginning the day after Rogers featured in England’s World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina. Chelsea agreed to pay £117m and had little difficulty persuading the player. Alonso personally presented the project to him, and the move was completed only five days after talks started.

Arsenal made no late attempt to revive the deal. Two days later, they recruited Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge for £34m and turned their attention elsewhere. By the end of the transfer window, however, Arteta appeared short of options on the left. Martinelli and Trossard had departed, while Tzolis was the only direct addition. Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke can also operate there, but Rogers still looks like a player Arsenal could have used, despite the substantial fee Chelsea paid.

Whether the 24-year-old can justify becoming the third most expensive footballer in English history is still uncertain. His price reflects an increasingly inflated market in which enormous transfer fees are beginning to lose their significance. Chelsea and Villa also exchanged considerable sums through several deals during the summer. Nevertheless, Rogers will continue to be judged against his fee, making his impressive opening performances particularly valuable.

Rogers has contributed to four of Chelsea’s seven goals across their opening two league fixtures. He found the net in a 3-2 victory at Fulham before linking with João Pedro in the buildup to Cole Palmer’s goal. Against Brighton last weekend, he created Pedro Neto’s strike in a 4-3 win and was also heavily involved when Jorrel Hato supplied João Pedro for another goal.

Chelsea’s attacking football has already provided plenty of excitement, with João Pedro, Rogers and Palmer forming a highly effective combination. Alonso would like his team to exercise greater control, but their quick transitions have been entertaining. Under Enzo Maresca, Chelsea played in a more measured and structured fashion. Alonso appears to have acknowledged the Premier League’s growing emphasis on physical strength and athletic ability, and Rogers is well suited to that approach. Thomas Tuchel also values his pressing and his ability to connect different areas of the team. England’s intensity notably increased after Rogers and Djed Spence entered late in the second half of the quarter-final against Norway.

Chelsea required greater power and pace. Rogers can operate across attacking midfield or play as a No 8, and he appears more naturally suited to Alonso’s 3-4-2-1 formation than Enzo Fernández, who joined Manchester City this week for £125m. Rogers has played alongside Palmer as one of two No 10s while also moving toward the left, a responsibility that may not have complemented Fernández’s qualities. Chelsea’s attacking trio will now present a serious challenge to Arsenal’s outstanding defence.

Rogers and Palmer have quickly developed an effective partnership. The longtime friends regularly joke about the “ice cold” celebration, while Rogers’ lively personality allows him to connect easily with teammates. Chelsea have been determined to create a healthier dressing-room culture, and Alonso is believed to have improved the atmosphere following last season’s internal disputes. The squad now appears united, which partly explains why Fernández was allowed to leave on deadline day rather than being brought back into the group.

Chelsea are entering a new era. Recruiting Rogers, named the Professional Footballers’ Association’s young player of the year in 2025, demonstrated the club’s ambition. He ranked among the Premier League’s strongest performers last season, developed significantly under Unai Emery and scored as Villa defeated Freiburg in the Europa League final in May.

That finish was less spectacular than many of his other goals: a smart touch at the near post following a low delivery. Rogers enjoyed a spell last season when he repeatedly scored from distance, but he has also discussed his desire to produce more untidy, close-range finishes. He did exactly that by reaching the far post to score his first Chelsea goal against Fulham.

Rogers is relishing his latest test. A move to Arsenal would have placed him in an already polished team that has reached the top. Chelsea, by contrast, are only starting their ascent under Alonso. Having previously competed in the Championship and spent time on loan in League One, Rogers was attracted by the opportunity to join a project that still has room to grow.
